Going Green on Better Nashville, WSMV 4 for Earth Day 2009
Earth Day & Earth Hour
Earth Day was celebrated by thousands across Nashville, TN this year, with many learning about ways to be greener and others doing their part to support our local ecosystem.
The point of this year’s festival was to help unite different groups with the same passion, said co-chair Jennifer Hagan-Dier.
Many of the booths had more serious missions: spreading the message of conservation and a greener Nashville. Aegis Science Corp. and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office partnered to offer safe disposal of expired medications.
“When you drop medication down the toilet, it goes straight to wastewater, and the system isn’t designed to deal with these substances,” said Rebecca Heltsley, a research scientist with Aegis. “They could have environmental effects over time … and we’re also trying to keep these medications off the streets and prevent identity theft.”
If you participated in Earth Hour, thank you, your participation made that success possible. As the lights fade in Honolulu bringing to a close Earth Hour’s roll out across 25 time zones in over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries, hundreds of millions of people have “voted earth” in the world’s largest demonstration of public concern about climate change. |
